South Korea
More than half of the world’s population today live in cities, and 80 percent of the world’s energy is consumed here. As part of its Strategy 2030 commitments, ADB aims to support cities in their journey to become low-carbon and more livable by supporting the development of a system that cities can use to implement climate actions customized to their needs. This system includes developing greenhouse gas (GHG) inventories at city-level and assessment-based strategic planning to enhance climate mitigation as well as sustainable and climate-resilient urban infrastructure while meeting unique city development objectives and stimulating innovation and job creation. Low carbon cities have a crucial position to contribute to achieving the targets set forth in a country’s nationally determined contributions on climate change, which also enhances their livability and prosperity.
The 2nd International Forum on Low Carbon Development for Cities shared international best practices on integrated systems thinking and transformation, low carbon options in mega-cities, sustainable built environment including buildings and adaptation infrastructure, advanced low carbon technologies including ICT/smart technology, and green finance and innovative funding mechanisms. The forum also emphasized the importance of engaging and activating all social actors for low carbon city development. Seoul’s low carbon development path was showcased through site visits to inspire other cities in achieving pedestrianization and over 60% use in public transport mode using intelligent transportation system and integrated transport business models, clean and diversified energy system using advanced technology including fuel-cell technology for hydrogen, non-combustion waste-to-energy applications, among others.
The Forum was co-organized with the following partners:
