A Practical Introduction to Water Quality Modeling

Water quality models can aid in planning and in assessing the environmental impacts of project-generated pollution. This presentation explains the uses, purposes, limitations, and components of water quality models; their application in the review of ADB-funded projects, with case studies as examples; water quality data collection and assuring data quality; interpretation of model results; the challenges and opportunities in water quality; and the terms of reference for a water quality modeling consultant.

Water pollution has been increasing in Asia, resulting in economic losses, health problems, and damage to aquatic systems. ADB-financed projects must not only meet environment safeguard requirements in water quality impacts; they must also incorporate environmental sustainability into project design.

Francesco Ricciardi

Mr. Francesco Ricciardi has more than 12 years of experience in Europe, Asia and South America. He has worked for private and public entities as an environmental advisor for Major Infrastructures and Power Plants developments, including Ports and Renewable Energies, and Environmental Policies implementation. Francesco has a vast knowledge of Safeguard Standards, policies and regulatory frameworks for impact assessment, industry best practices, biodiversity assessment, regional and international regulations and policies, and scientific communication to non-specialist audiences.

Training Course on Pollution, Health, and Safety Management in ADB Projects - Water Quality Module

ADB’s Training Course on Pollution, Health, and Safety Management in ADB Projects was organized in response to an indicated need for better understanding of how the general and industry-specific Environmental, Health, and Safety Guidelines are applicable to ADB projects, how to assess the environmental impacts of project-generated pollution, and how to identify performance standards.

Pavit Ramachandran

Mr. Ramachandran serves as the Country Director at the Mongolia Resident Mission with the Asian Development Bank. He is responsible for overall country program, operational portfolio and knowledge management. Leads operations in Mongolia managing an active portfolio of around $2 billion. Supervises the implementation of the ADB's Country Operations Business Plan in line with the current Country Partnership Strategy, 2017-2020 and the next Country Partnership Strategy to be developed.

Satoshi Ishii

Satoshi Ishii is the Director, Strategy and Partnerships Team, Water and Urban Development Sectors Group at the Asian Development Bank (ADB). Previously, he served as ADB’s Viet Nam urban–water sector focal. He is an environmental engineer and urban sector expert with more than 18 years of experience, including 15 years with development finance institutions. He has designed and managed city water, sanitation, transport, energy, and infrastructure projects in Cambodia, Lao People’s Democratic Republic, Malaysia, People’s Republic of China, Thailand, and Viet Nam.

Shakeel Khan

Shakeel has an excellent humanitarian quality. He helps others out of the way. He established high scholastic standards as a student at CSU and developed a high level of expertise in the field of water resources planning and management. 

He had his Ph.D. in Water Resources Planning and Management at Colorado State University. 

 

Robert Guild

Robert is the Team Leader for the Pacific Region Infrastructure Facility. Prior to joining PRIF, Robert held a number of senior roles with the Asian Development Bank. He also spent four years as the Economic Infrastructure Adviser at the Pacific Islands Forum Secretariat in Fiji and served two years as a volunteer in the Solomon Islands.

Cynthia Malvicini

Cindy Malvicini has held numerous lead positions in operations and communications in ADB. Prior to her appointment as Country Director, she was ADB’s Deputy Country Director and Officer-in-Charge for Uzbekistan. From 2007 to 2014, she worked as a Water Resource Specialist in ADB’s South Asia Department, and until 2017, she served as Project Management Unit Head. She graduated from Cornell University in New York in 2000 and Wheaton Graduate School in Illinois in 1988. She has master’s degrees in agriculture (water resources management) and intercultural studies.
