Along with rapid urbanization occurring in many countries in Asia and the Pacific, one of the urban development challenges faced by cities is addressing the needs of their aging population and people with disabilities. By 2030, Asia will be the second-fastest aging region in the world at a 66% expected increase in the 60 and over age group. This spells the need to make urban development and services more inclusive.

How Can Governments Identify and Reach the Poor in the Wake of COVID-19

The presentation talks about some options and guiding priniciples in casting social safety net programs for governments, to help mitigate the impact of COVID-19. It compares a range of programs available for policymakers in terms of risks and challenges, relative strengths and weaknesses, and reach, as well as provide examples from country experiences. As economies move into the transition period post-COVID19, it is important to invest in protection systems that allow for better identification, enrolment, payment, and delivery of benefits to all vulnerable groups.

A Lesson Learnt: The Operation of Community-Based Micro-Hydro Power of Wangan Aji

Community participation is a key factor for sustainable clean energy deployment. Micro-Hydro Power (MHP) built in Wangan Aji is one of the success stories of community-based clean energy implementation in Indonesia. The Wangan Aji MHP plant was constructed as run-off river utilizing the irrigation channel of Wangan Aji, Wonosobo, Central Java Province. It consists of 2 (two) propeller turbines with a capacity of 70 kW, each. Under its Poverty and Environment Program (PEP), ADB has assisted the Government of Indonesia to implement MHP Wangan Aji as a pilot intervention.

Michiko Suga

Ms. Suga joined ADB in 2004 and worked in the Southeast Asia (SERD) and Pacific Regional Department (PARD) including a two-year assignment to the Lao Resident Mission. She also worked for the European Investment Bank (EIB) where she led the process of drafting and introducing EIB’s first social policy guidelines and established institutional arrangements for EIB operations worldwide to operationalize the new policy. Prior to joining ADB, Ms. Suga worked for UNDP in the context of institutional policy planning, resource mobilization and project management.

Nasheeba Selim

Ms. Nasheeba Selim is currently working as the Social Development and Gender Specialist in the Bangladesh Resident Mission, ADB. In the past, she has worked with UNDP Bangladesh and been directly involved in the administration of the Chittagong Hill Tracts Development Facility where she worked closely with disadvantaged ethnic minorities groups. Her areas of specialization include gender relations and equality, women's empowerment, mainstreaming gender in sectoral programs, violence against women, sex work and human rights, early marriage and feminization of poverty.

Disability Innovation and Inclusive Urban Development

Victoria Austin, director and co-founder of Global Disability Innovation Hub, will share lessons on creating inclusive environment and the role innovation can play in tackling disability from her experience with Paralympic Legacy Programme in the UK. The program includes designing urban development projects which address themes of re-development, physical access improvements, skills development, disability sports, and volunteering. The event is jointly organized by Social Development TG, Urban SG, and Digital Technology for Development Unit.
