Workshop Report - Promoting Environmentally Sustainable Smart Cities

ADB’s South Asia Department, in collaboration with the Republic of Korea’s Ministry of Environment (MoE), Korea Environmental Industry and Technology Institute (KEITI), and K-water, organized a four-day knowledge and networking workshop in Seoul, Republic of Korea on 15-18 October 2018 on “Promoting Environmentally Sustainable Smart Cities.”

Workshop on Promoting Environmentally Sustainable Smart Cities

Asian cities are expected to accommodate another 1 billion people within the next 2 decades. Cities drive economic growth, but rapid urbanization is threatening the quality of life and degrading environmental systems. Many South Asian cities already face challenges of environmental degradation, inadequate urban infrastructure and services, and inefficient management systems.

Dinesh Shiwakoti

Currently Head, Project Administration Unit, Pakistan Resident Mission, Islamabad.

Before joining ADB, Dinesh worked in Vietnam, Singapore, Japan, Thailand, and Nepal.

He has extensive experience in physical infrastructure projects in planning, designing, procuring, executing and implementing contracts. He also Served as Project Manager, Contract Specialist, Quantity Surveyor, Geotechnical Specialist, and Civil Engineer. He is a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrator, and FIDIC Certified Adjudicator.

 

Ather Ashraf

Ather Ashraf is also a Spatial Data Engineer/Consultant at the Al Madina Al Munswarah Development Authority. He has extensive research and work experience in the field of GIS in large organizations, including the United Nations Development Programme, Asian Development Bank, Focus Humanitarian, ILF Pvt. Ltd, and NESPAK Pvt. Ltd. His areas of specialization are Water Informatics, Land Suitability Modeling, Fuzzy GIS, Intelligent System, GIS Engineering/ Development, Image Processing, Geostatistics, and  Geoprocessing.

Disability Innovation and Inclusive Urban Development

Victoria Austin, director and co-founder of Global Disability Innovation Hub, will share lessons on creating inclusive environment and the role innovation can play in tackling disability from her experience with Paralympic Legacy Programme in the UK. The program includes designing urban development projects which address themes of re-development, physical access improvements, skills development, disability sports, and volunteering. The event is jointly organized by Social Development TG, Urban SG, and Digital Technology for Development Unit.
