Rapid urbanization has been accompanied by increasing demand for energy and natural resources, and consequently disproportionate greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from cities. Witnessing unprecedented variability in weather conditions, anticipating climate change-induced threat, and recognizing the urgency to act, a historic agreement was made at the United Nations Climate Change Conference of Parties in Paris in December 2015.

Asia's Urban Challenge

Cities in Asia increasingly face the triple challenges of rapid urbanization, aging population, and climate change. Smart urban development is an imperative given the challenges. A business-as-usual approach, however, will simply not achieve sustainable urban development and smart cities; a combination of leadership, partnership, and innovation is needed.
