Smart Cities: A Case Study of Singapore

03 April 2017 to 05 April 2017
Singapore

Just how smart is Singapore? Learn about the country's Smart Nation Initiative which aims to harness the power of ICTs in improving city life.

ICT has been used holistically to bolster financial and managerial capacities of local governments and municipal service providers; manage urban traffic, and increase the competence and autonomy of urban water supply, as well as sanitation and solid waste providers. Now, under the name of “smart city”, many cities are trying to improve urban services and management by integrating cross-sector urban technologies, knowledge-intensive activities, and innovation to create new economic opportunities and boost living standards.

ADB and the Government of Singapore developed a training program to help ADB staff learn the case of Singapore's Smart Nation Initiative and contribute to enhancing the quality of ADB’s operations in designing of potential ADB urban projects covering urban, transportation, water, energy and e-government based on the learning outcome. Through the training program, the participating staff learned how the government, enterprises and the people work together towards making cities smart and encapsulate what activities needs and how to implement putting in place the priorities and goals and the key components and critical success factors to building a Smart City, using Singapore as a Case Study. The eGovernment Leadership Center of the National University of Singapore coordinated the program with various public and private agencies and resource people relevant to the program.
