Asia-Pacific Railway Innovations Forum 2019

The level of railway technology varies greatly throughout developing Asia and the Pacific but is often ancient in terms of railway infrastructures, systems, and rolling stock. New technologies in the digital sphere, from control systems to data gathering, create an immense opportunity, but at the same time, the agony of choice as countries must sort and prioritize which technologies are the most appropriate in their specific, national case.

Olly Norojono

Mr. Olly Norojono joined the Asian Development Bank (ADB) in 2002. He has more than 30 years of professional experience. During his work with ADB, he prepared and managed projects in Afghanistan, Indonesia, Kazakhstan, Pakistan, and Uzbekistan. He was appointed as the country director for Azerbaijan in 2010 where he was in charge of developing and managing ADB's portfolio in the country. He assumed office as the Director for Transport, Energy, and Natural Resources at Pacific Department in October 2015. Prior to working with ADB, he was teaching and conducting research in Indonesia. Jurg Grutter

Jürg Grütter has worked for more than 30 years on sustainable transport, linking climate finance with transport. He has helped develop GHG transport methodologies and more than 300 sustainable transport projects linked to climate finance. He was a member of the Technology Executive Committee and advisory board member of the Climate Technology Centre and Network of the UNFCCC as a representative of the Swiss government.

Youth and Sustainable Transport in Asia and the Pacific

ADB Youth for Asia advocates for improved rural access, road safety, public transportation, and railways. To achieve sustainable, safe, accessible, and reliable public transportation for all, it aims to (i) develop an accessible and engaging network for youth; (ii) encourage meaningful youth stakeholder engagement, and (iii) empower youth as sustainable public transport advocates and stewards.

ADB Transport Forum 2018

By ADB estimates, the Asian transport sector will require over $8.4 trillion in investments until 2030 in order to continue the region’s growth trajectory while responding to the challenges of climate change. Opportunities exist to close the infrastructure funding gap and direct the financing toward more sustainable, resilient transport infrastructure, and the forum provides an opportunity to discuss these opportunities and attendant challenges.​

Heather has more than 20 years international of experience and is a highly regarded expert in gender, urban transport, sustainable development and climate change. She worked at UITP, the International Association of Public Transport with members and as Program Director for Sustainable Transport with the UK Transport Research Laboratory’s Sustainable Transport Group.
