Sarulla Geothermal Project: Tapping Indonesia’s Geothermal Resources

Dependence on fossil fuels exposes Indonesia to frequent changes in the price and supply of oil and coal, and increases greenhouse gas emissions that contribute to climate change. A project backed by Asian Development Bank (ADB) will help harness Indonesia’s largely untapped geothermal resources, allowing the country to meet its power demand while promoting a clean energy source.

Andrew Jeffries is the Country Director for the Philippines at the Asian Development Bank, where he leads ADB operations and engagement with a country portfolio of approximately $12.5 billion. He has 34 years of professional experience, including more than 19 years with ADB. Previously, he led region-wide energy transition initiatives, served as ADB’s Country Director for Viet Nam, and was Director of the Southeast Asia Energy Division, overseeing investments in energy infrastructure and policy advice.

While the Public-Private Partnership/Build–Operate–Transfer structure is possible for WTE, the challenge is to increase the number of commercial banks that are keen to finance this type of project.
