Turning Plastic Waste into Infrastructure Value in Papua New Guinea

This presentation showed how Papua New Guinea’s plastic waste challenge had been turned into an opportunity by converting waste plastics into infrastructure materials. It outlined the country’s high waste leakage, limited recycling, and growing infrastructure needs, and highlighted the Port Moresby pilot where locally processed plastics had been used in road construction to support a shift toward a circular economy.

Prof. Filippo Giustozzi is from RMIT University in Melbourne, Australia, who is a pavement materials and design specialist with over 18 years’ consultancy experience in Europe, the Middle East, South East Asia, and Australia. His consultancy portfolio covers the design and performance optimisation of road pavements, environmental analyses, development and implementation of polymer-modified bitumen systems, recycling technologies for roads and construction waste, and the integration of sustainability into large-scale highway and airport projects.

In his role at Mober Philippines, Miguel leads sustainability integration, human resources, training, and corporate culture. Previously, he was the former Head of Sustainability Governance at GCash, where he oversaw sustainability strategies, ESG risk management, and corporate sustainability compliance. Before that, he spent 12 years at Globe, leading citizenship and advocacy marketing, and stakeholder engagement and management.
