Application of Satellite Remote Sensing to Disaster Risk Management

Prof. Fusanori Miura, Vice President of Yamaguchi University (YU) discussed the effective use of satellite remote sensing technologies for the disaster risk management, including early warning and post-disaster impact assessments. YU recently established the Center for Research and Application of Satellite Remote Sensing to facilitate researches and practical uses of satellite remote sensing technologies at the field level. The initiative is being carried out based on a tripartite agreement with the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency and Yamaguchi Prefectural government.

In this Urban Studio Session, Brian Capati of Cities Development Initiative for Asia (CDIA) and ADB's Arnaud Heckman discussed how the Pre-Feasibility on Ulaanbaatar’s Ger Area Cultural Heritage, Tourism and Community Enhancement Project conducted by CDIA can help in identifying urban infrastructure investments and financing options. This can eventually enhance the value of cultural heritage landmarks in selected Ger areas and provide economic opportunities for Ger inhabitants.

ADB Resilience Academy

Sansank Vemuri, Urban Resilience Specialist for the Urban Climate Change Resilience Trust Fund, presented on ADB Resilience Academy (ADB RA), an intensive project development workshop patterned after the Resilience Academy of the Rockefeller Foundation. ADB RA gathers interdisciplinary teams from cities to design projects that aim to address current and future climate-related risks while enhancing the climate resilience of vulnerable communities.
