Video: Enabling Public-Private Partnerships in Sri Lanka: Highlights of the PPP Monitor

Recognizing the vital role of public-private partnerships (PPP) for Sri Lanka in the current phase of development, ADB facilitated this knowledge event to introduce emerging highlights from ADB’s Sri Lanka PPP Monitor and initiate a discussion among stakeholders on improving the enabling environment for PPPs in the country.

Serendipity Knowledge Program for Sri Lanka

Serendipity Knowledge Program is an ADB platform dedicated to identifying knowledge solutions for Sri Lanka’s development challenges. Serendib is one of Sri Lanka’s ancient names and serendipity refers to a fortunate finding, which is a common occurrence throughout the history of product invention and scientific discovery.

ADB established this new knowledge program in 2021 in line with its vision as a knowledge solutions bank.

Ahamadh Mubarak

Ahamadh Mubarak is the Director in charge of Water Supply, Housing and Urban Development and Environment Clusters, of Department of National Planning, Ministry of National Policies, and Economic Affairs in Sri Lanka. Mr. Mubarak obtained his Bachelor of Business Administration degree from the University of Colombo in 1998 and completed his MSc at Ritsuimeken Asia Pacific University in Japan in the field of International Cooperation Policy 2010. He joined the Department of National Planning in 2002 as an assistant director to the poverty and regional development cluster.

Implementation of Waste to Energy as a Sustainable Urban Energy Solution in Sri Lanka

The national perspective of waste to energy (WtE) option as a sustainable urban energy solution in Sri Lanka is explored. Recently, the government has given emphasis for WtE, not only to manage municipal solid waste (MSW) but also to achieve targets in renewable energy and nationally determined contributions. Yet, no significant progress is seen, indicating a variety of challenges related to waste collection, composition, heating value, quantity, transport distance, expertise, finance, land, etc.

Potential role of Electric Utilities in Supporting Transport Electrification in Sri Lanka

This presentation analyzes the potential role of electric utilities in supporting Transport Electrification (TE) in Sri Lanka. It outlines the barriers to the adoption of electric vehicles (EVs) as well as regulatory and pricing issues in Sri Lanka. It also compares and contrasts the outcomes, learning, and arguments from the U.S. State Public Utilities Commission Proceedings to Sri Lanka from a qualitative perspective, looking into degrees of utility ownership, equity, market competition, innovation, managed charging and social inclusion to inform TE policy in Sri Lanka.
