Green bonds are debt-financing instruments aiming to connect private sector funding with projects that provide positive environmental benefits. This session examines how international discussions are shaping green bonds; reviews the measures and options to help scale up green bond investment in the region; and discusses the difficulties in mobilizing green bond markets.
Mobilization of capital markets is essential to facilitate and contribute to the financing of large-scale investments geared towards a 2°C world. In the case of HSBC, the proceeds of each green bond it issues are used to finance eligible businesses and projects that share its commitment to environmental sustainability and support the transition to a low-carbon economy.
The need to green all finance and not just bonds means financing of investments that provide environmental benefits in the broader context of environmentally sustainable development. ADB’s Green Finance Catalyzing Facility is an innovative financing solution for enhancing both financially-bankable as well as environmentally-sustainable infrastructure projects.
