Opening Session Recording

Rapid urbanization in Asia and the Pacific calls for increased actions in climate-resilient urban development given the inordinate demands that it places on cities for improved planning, increased investments in infrastructure, efficient delivery of services, and constant innovation to leverage evolving opportunities.

Building the Climate Change Resilience of Mongolia’s Blue Pearl—A Case Study from Khuvsgul Lake National Park

Khuvsgul Lake National Park is one of Mongolia’s most popular tourist destinations and supports global biodiversity values and is the country’s largest source of freshwater. Climate change threatens these values. Many protected areas across Asia and the Pacific are also threatened by climate change, yet few quantitative studies or applied management guidance are available for land managers.

Geohazard Risk Reduction: High-tech and Community Approaches

The session presented case studies of landslide risk reduction in the Kyrgyz Republic and Pakistan. CWER presented the recently approved Landslide Risk Management Sector Project.

The project featured the use of GIS and earth observation for site selection, feasibility study, and landslide monitoring. The PRM urban and DRM unit presented the recently completed Flood Emergency Reconstruction and Resilience Project and the ongoing National Disaster Risk Reduction Fund Project. It included the successful implementation of community-based solutions for hazard risk management.
