ADB and the Netherlands Water Partnership (NWP) hosted the Asia Netherlands Water Learning Week (ANWLW) in The Hague, The Netherlands, on 15-19 April.
The ANWLW was a week-long intensive program that brought together project teams from across the Asian Development Bank (ADB)’s developing member countries with water experts from the Netherlands.

In this learning event, Joel Yu, chief regulator of the Philippines' Metropolitan Waterworks and Sewerage System Regulatory Office (MWSS-RO) emphasized the need for a strong regulating body to implement and oversee water concession agreements in mega-cities such as Metro Manila. He also shared the MWSS-RO's initiatives, and how they can succeed with the support of other institutions, such as ADB.
In 2015, Viet Nam was one of the countries severely affected by El Nino. Many of its provinces experienced droughts that placed many crops and people at risk. To assist the country in addressing this challenge, ADB provided technical assistance and fostered partnerships that improved climate resilience, environmental sustainability, and agricultural water productivity in drought-affected provinces of the country.
The El Nino in 2015 wreaked extensive damage to many areas in Viet Nam. The country experienced a 40% to 70% rainfall deficit which affected over 400,000 hectares of crop land. Two million people were affected and 18 provinces were placed under a state of emergency. Moreover, historcal floods inundated many areas in the country the following year.
