Modernizing Irrigation Systems in Drought Affected Provinces of Viet Nam (Goverment's Response)
The El Nino in 2015 wreaked extensive damage to many areas in Viet Nam. The country experienced a 40% to 70% rainfall deficit which affected over 400,000 hectares of crop land. Two million people were affected and 18 provinces were placed under a state of emergency. Moreover, historcal floods inundated many areas in the country the following year. The government, in response, planned and implemented a short-, medium- and long-term response strategy, promoted crop diversification, adopted high efficiency irrigation techniques, and initiated partnerships with development organizations, such as the ADB.
