WaterAid: A WASH strong COVID-19 response

In this presentation, WaterAid shared their response to COVID-19 in Asia and the Pacific, specifically in the eight countries they work in: Bangladesh, Cambodia, India, Myanmar, Nepal, Pakistan, Papua New Guinea, and Timor-Leste. Given the changing dynamics of the pandemic, WaterAid has taken a context-specific and phased approach to support government-led action plans, depending on rate of transmission and lockdowns, and prioritizing the most marginalized groups.

Edkarl Galing

Karl has more than 20 years of experience working on water resources management; water supply, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH); solid waste and wastewater management; and environmental and engineering geological assessments. He currently serves as ADB’s urban development specialist in the Southeast Asia and Pacific region managing various technical assistance and investment programs on water, sanitation, and urban development projects.

DHouse: A Sustainable Innovation of Passive Traditional Systems of Bahay Kubo, Designed for Urban Resilience

DHouse is an existing modern shelter built in a flood-prone city designed to address anticipated problems that affect the ecology of the built environment and urban development. It highlights practical applications through natural ventilation, daylighting, illumination control, indoor thermal control through building envelope strategies brought down the energy consumption by more than 50% from the base case.

Youth Engagement Model for Water Supply and Sanitation Projects: Lessons from Dushanbe

This material presents a case study from Dushanbe, Tajikistan, where lessons from youth participation in the technical assistance Dushanbe Urban Water Supply and Sanitation Project (TA-9407) are shared. It includes a discussion on how to improve and increase youth involvement in project design and implementation for upcoming investments across different sectors.

Alan Baird

Mr. Alan Baird is a Principal Urban Development Specialist in the Southeast Asia Department of the Asian Development Bank. Mr. Baird has over 30 years of experience in water supply, wastewater management, drainage, and flood alleviation. He has worked with water service providers in the private and public sectors in project delivery and technical advisory roles. Alan joined ADB in 2010 and currently supports ADB urban and water sector clients in Southeast Asia. Mr. Baird is a Chartered Engineer and a Member of the Institution of Civil Engineers.
