Building the Pakistan Road Assessment Program to Star Rate National Highways for Safety: PakistanRAP Update

Greg Smith presented updates on PakistanRAP, an initiative of Pakistan's National Highway Authority, with support of ADB. It includes the conduct of road assessments for the country's national highways, capacity building activities for local policymakers, engineers and consultants to perform iRAP assessments and turn Star Rating assessments into safer roads.

Michael Anyala

Michael Anyala is Senior Road Asset Management Specialist at the Transport Sector Group, Sustainable Development, and Climate Change Department, Asian Development Bank. Dr. Anyala has over 15 years of experience in transport, working internationally with development organizations, governments, the private sector, and research institutions. He is road asset management technical lead at ADB and provides advice on road sub-sector strategic direction and technical issues to operations departments and developing member countries. Dr. Anyala obtained his Ph.D.

Roads as Instruments for Water Management and Climate Resilience

Roads typically cause erosion, flooding, and water logging, whereas water is the prime cause of damage to roads. As such, roads and water are often considered as enemies; albeit if remedied, both could be friends. Roads can become instruments for water management and climate resilience. MetaMeta’s Frank van Steenbergen discussed the Green Roads Initiative, presenting techniques and examples from different countries.

Zilong Wang, East Asia Department intern from Rutgers University, shares insights on the use of web-based data mining in road network evaluation in China. He presents overview of the provincial road network in China and shares the effect of local road network in intercity transport.

Asian Development Bank’s East Asia Department intern Zilong Wang shared his findings on road network performance in the People’s Republic of China using data mining approach. The relationship between road network in different provinces and a variety of factors related to economy, geography, and public interest was also discussed.
