She graduated from the American University in Cairo (B.A. in Sociology) as the top student in 1976 and was a member of the House of Representatives of Japan from 1993 until 2016 when she resigned to run in the Tokyo gubernatorial election. She also previously served as the Minister of Defense in the first cabinet of Prime Minister Shinzō Abe but resigned in August 2007 after only 54 days in office.
