WaterAid: A WASH strong COVID-19 response

In this presentation, WaterAid shared their response to COVID-19 in Asia and the Pacific, specifically in the eight countries they work in: Bangladesh, Cambodia, India, Myanmar, Nepal, Pakistan, Papua New Guinea, and Timor-Leste. Given the changing dynamics of the pandemic, WaterAid has taken a context-specific and phased approach to support government-led action plans, depending on rate of transmission and lockdowns, and prioritizing the most marginalized groups.

Flood Risk from Dams - TA 9634 Work with IWUMD in Myanmar

This presentation discussed the background and work that has been carried out under the TA 9634 with Myanmar's Irrigation and Water Utilization Management Department (IWUMD), a governmental organization under the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Irrigation (MOALI). The project is supporting the hydrological and hydraulic reassessment of a number of spillways in Myanmar.

Hazardous Material Management in Thilawa Special Economic Zone (SEZ)

The Thilawa Special Economic Zone is the first operational SEZ in Myanmar and one of the largest industrial development. Thilawa SEZ recognized the need for proper hazardous material management in addition to waste management to avoid accidents such as chemical accidents and explosions. It has adopted aspects of health impact assessment as a risk management tool, as well as a management tool for healthy economic zones development.

Myanmar: Working with Incentives and Identifying Common Ground to Produce a Collaborative, Inclusive Fisheries Law

The Rakhine Fisheries Law is a new benchmark for Myanmar both in terms of delivering equitable resource sharing and, crucially, as a replicable model for consultation and public participation in policy-making. This case demonstrates that despite decades of repressive state machinery, with the right process, government departments can embrace new ways of working and thinking.
