SEADS 2021: Deep Dive Workshop on Reinventing Smart Cities after COVID-19

The COVID-19 pandemic is symbolic of the major shocks and stresses that cities can expect to encounter in the future. COVID-19 has exposed and magnified the underlying vulnerability of our rapidly urbanizing and highly interconnected world. As cities and governmental bodies shift from immediate response to long-term recovery, calls to "build back better" grow louder.

SERD Policy Talk (SPOT): Building Dynamic SMEs

Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) have generally lagged behind, being less productive and profitable than bigger companies. Now, SMEs face the added challenge of the COVID-19 pandemic and technology disruptions. But the crisis may offer an opportunity for SMEs to enter new areas and disrupt existing business models. For example, there are lot of potential in remote working, fintech, education and health. SMEs may be better at spotting these opportunities and taking advantage of them.

Opening Remarks: Promoting Gender Equality in COVID-19 Response and Recovery

Masatsuga Asakawa, President of Asian Development Bank, delivered the opening remarks expressing commitment to ensuring that gender equality is at the heart of ADB’s response to and recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic. He discussed how ADB’s support directly addressed one of the pandemic’s devastating consequences—the increased rates of gender-based violence. He mentioned that ADB has worked with its DMCs to provide resources for gender-based violence support programs.
