Maria-Goreti Muavesi

Maria-Goreti Muavesi joined IUCN Oceania Regional Office (ORO) in 2013 where she oversees the implementation of ORO’s environmental law programme. She obtained her law degree from the University of the South Pacific in 2004 and was admitted to the Fiji High Court Bar in 2005. In 2018, she graduated from the University of Wollongong, Wollongong, Australia with a Master of Fisheries Policy.

Gender Inclusive Disaster Risk Reduction and Management

Justice Robyn Layton shared an ADB project that she has been working on with Dr. Mary Picard. This project analyzes the climate change and disaster risk management policies and the green jobs market for women in Fiji, Lao People's Democratic Republic, and Mongolia. It includes the crafting of a good practice gender inclusive legislative framework to strengthen women's resilience to climate change and disaster risk.

Climate Litigation: The Fight Heats Up

Briony Eales explained the concept and types of climate litigation. She then discussed a few cases exemplifying the complexities of standing for public interest suits, holding governments accountable, permitting and judicial review, cases against private parties, climate adaptation, impacts on vulnerable people, and post-disaster and climate migration. She concluded by providing key takeaways on climate justice.

Maria Cecilia Sicangco

Maria Cecilia T. Sicangco is a Climate Change Law and Policy Specialist/Knowledge Management Specialist (Consultant) under the Law and Policy Reform Program of the Asian Development Bank (ADB). Her work includes environmental law, climate change law and policy, women’s legal literacy and access to justice in Islamic countries, gender sensitization, and energy and water sector regulation in Southeast Asia and small-island developing states in the Pacific.
