Agricultural Market Efforts in Southeast Asia: Case of Myanmar and Thailand

Natural hazards such as floods and drought increasingly occur due to extreme weather events that are exacerbated by climate change. To cope with the adverse effects of climate change, familiarization of agricultural insurance as an adaptation measure is needed especially by developing world farmers who depend on agriculture for their livelihood. The Weather Index Insurance was developed by Sompo Japan Nipponkoa Insurance as a climate change adaptation measure for some countries in Southeast Asia.

New Approach for Farmers' Poverty Reduction Weather Index Insurance Using Satellite-Based Information

Sompo Japan Nipponkoa Insurance's Ken Gohara and Remote Sensing Technology Center of Japan's Tsugito Nagano presented how the Weather Index Insurance can pay out a contractually predetermined insurance amount when weather indices such as temperature, wind speed, and rainfall exceed specified thresholds.

ADB Green Bond Framework

ADB’s Green Bond Framework defines eligible projects to support developing member countries seeking to adapt to and mitigate the consequences of climate change. The Green Bond portfolio of ADB specifically targets projects that promote the transition to low-carbon and climate-resilient growth.

Accessing the Green Climate Fund

The Green Climate Fund (GCF) channels public climate financing to help developing countries become climate resilient. It provides grants, loans, equities, or guarantees to climate change mitigation and adaptation projects, especially in countries that are highly vulnerable to changing weather patterns. To date, GCF has assisted three ADB projects. This learning session will familiarize ADB participants with the GCF and the ways they can access it to support water and urban projects in Asia and the Pacific.
