The Asian Development Bank (ADB), in collaboration with the Government of Japan’s Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (JMAFF), established the Expert Committee (EC), together with ASEAN participating countries such as the Philippines and Viet Nam and well-established research institutes. This initiative aimed to share Japan’s knowledge and experiences in paddy field management to increase food production while reducing greenhouse gas emissions in the agriculture sector of the ASEAN region, contributing to sustainable agricultural practices and climate change mitigation.

As Japan and ASEAN countries had similar climate conditions and agricultural practices, Japan was able to share its knowledge and experiences in paddy field management to increase food production while reducing greenhouse gas emissions in the agriculture sector of the ASEAN region.

Expert Committee Meetings on Climate-Resilient Agriculture and Low-Carbon Food Systems in the ASEAN Region

The Asian Development Bank (ADB), in collaboration with the Government of Japan’s Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (JMAFF), has launched a project to mitigate climate change in the agriculture sector, while addressing issues surrounding agriculture and food systems in the Asia and Pacific region. This ADB-JMAFF collaborative project aims to balance farmers’ incomes and mitigate climate change by introducing climate-smart technologies and utilizing bilateral credit scheme in accordance with the Paris Agreement.

Maria Theresa Medina Castro is an Assistant Professor at the Institute of Cooperatives and Bio-Enterprise Development (ICOPED), College of Economics and Management, University of the Philippines Los Banos. She finished her Master’s degree in Development Studies with Distinction at Victoria University of Wellington, New Zealand. For the past 10 years, she has been involved in different international and local research projects focused on gender, agriculture, climate change, disaster risk management, and international rural development.
