Geohazard Risk Reduction: High-tech and Community Approaches

The session presented case studies of landslide risk reduction in the Kyrgyz Republic and Pakistan. CWER presented the recently approved Landslide Risk Management Sector Project.

The project featured the use of GIS and earth observation for site selection, feasibility study, and landslide monitoring. The PRM urban and DRM unit presented the recently completed Flood Emergency Reconstruction and Resilience Project and the ongoing National Disaster Risk Reduction Fund Project. It included the successful implementation of community-based solutions for hazard risk management.

Along with rapid urbanization occurring in many countries in Asia and the Pacific, one of the urban development challenges faced by cities is addressing the needs of their aging population and people with disabilities. By 2030, Asia will be the second-fastest aging region in the world at a 66% expected increase in the 60 and over age group. This spells the need to make urban development and services more inclusive.
