Combatting Urban Air Pollution Impacts on Maternal and Child Health in Asia: A Science and Policy Dialogue
Air pollution results in 7 million premature deaths every year globally. Almost 99% of children under 5 years old in Asian lower-middle-income countries are exposed to levels of fine particulate matter (PM2.5) exceeding the WHO air quality guideline. According to UNICEF, almost 17 million children under the age of one live in regions where outdoor air pollution is at least 6 times higher than international limits. Furthermore, air pollution is associated with some of the biggest killers of children, such as pneumonia, which is responsible for the deaths of 920,000 children under 5 years of age every year.
