JICA’s New Research on Remittances and Household Finances in the Philippines and Tajikistan
There is a need to deepen our understanding of remittances and the role it plays in household finances. The Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) initiated a study that would determine the effects of remittances on household finances in two rural study sites in the Philippines and Tajikistan. Through a survey on migrants and their households, this study aims to determine whether or not remittances are channeled into investments. It also seeks to develop and test financial education interventions as well as provide policy guidance on developing innovative financial products. Findings of the study can be used to develop interventions that could bring rural development and less dependence on remittances in the future.
