The Korea Educational Broadcasting System (EBS) is a major educational television and radio network contributing greatly to improve and develop lifelong and democratic education in the Republic of Korea. This presentation discusses the platform that EBS uses and the content it produces. EBS’ strategies in international cooperation and partnership formation are also examined.

Customizing a Decentralized Sanitation Solution for Viet Nam's Peri-urban Areas

Kieu Ky, a crafts commune located 18 kilometers downstream of Ha Noi’s city center, is a typical peri-urban area experiencing problems related to urbanization such as rapid population growth and environmental degradation. It is largely left to fend for itself since infrastructure and services are cornered by the city center.

Sanitation is a service sorely lacking in Kieu Ky, and residents bear the burden of managing their wastewater. They rely mainly on septic tanks and dry latrines but both these systems have proven ineffective in treating wastewater.

The agriculture sector in Viet Nam was highly fragmented, with low investments and ineffective linkage among research, extension services, and support facilities. Traditional top-down approach had also led to the sector’s failure to tap local farming know-how. This knowledge showcase illustrates how engaging poor farmers in improving agriculture productivity and incomes can yield successful results.

To help prevent the occurrence of a middle-income trap, the development of vocational training in Viet Nam is considered a priority. As the market mechanism, however, cannot solve the equity issue in vocational training, the role of the government in setting policies to support the disadvantaged becomes indispensable.
