This presentation highlighted Asia's lead in the global deployment of solar PVs and the shrinking costs to set up utility-scale solar farms. It also outlined possible next steps in unleashing solar power.

It also considered the potential of developing solar PVs in developing countries, as well as the potential for the relocation of the PRC's solar manufacturing capacity.

This presentation discussed the advantages of stable power, the key items required and a case study. Intermittent power can have difficulties to integrate small to medium sized grids, such as many grid islands we see in South-East Asia. Power plants which deliver a firm, stable and dispatchable power will facilitate the integration of renewable energy on small to medium sized grids. Such stable power can integrate up to 80% grid capacity.

Wind and solar are undergoing a global revolution with rapidly increasing installations driven by a range of technical, economic, regulatory, and institutional drivers. Recent work under the USAID, US-APEC Technical Assistance to Advance Regional Integration (US-ATAARI) project, found that countries throughout Asia are setting ambitious clean energy targets but for many countries, progress towards those targets is not keeping up.

Most Solar Home Systems available in the market are low power solutions typically up to 100 watts, that can run lights, fans, and a small TV. Cygni has pioneered the development of 48V DC System, which goes beyond the traditional solar home systems, and that can power appliances up to 500 watts. It can run not only domestic appliances but also productive use appliances like water pumps, dryers, mixer/grinders, rice polishers/huskers, water dispensers, and Freezers/Refrigerators. The ownership of this equipment is either individual or community-based.

Through deepening solar, wind, and biomass contributions to power mixes in the countries of the Mekong Basin and rethinking how hydropower and cross-border power trade are positioned to meet regional power demand needs, it is possible to achieve a low impact, low carbon, and low cost energy transition AND conserve the Mighty Mekong's natural resource base. This presentation demonstrated decision making tools and policy pathways for system-scale energy planning and tradeoff analyses at the basin-wide scope that should be used to deliver this transition. In this presentation, Mr. Rai introduced the concept of impact investing, and how it institutionalized microfinance. He also highlighted problems in the waste and agriculture sectors and sample solutions brought about by impact investment. He also emphasized the potential role of Impact Investing in re-imagining renewable energy solutions such as solar and biofuels, and what multilateral institutions such as ADB can do to support this approach.

The presentation acknowledges the role Solar Energy has played in transforming the Electricity sector around the globe and its indispensability to the cause of displacing high emission intensity technologies from the electricity sector, in light of the global commitment under COP 21 of UNFCCC. The presentation attempted to analyze the impact of the deployment of solar energy in achieving sustainable development goals.
