Building the Pakistan Road Assessment Program to Star Rate National Highways for Safety: PakistanRAP Update

Greg Smith presented updates on PakistanRAP, an initiative of Pakistan's National Highway Authority, with support of ADB. It includes the conduct of road assessments for the country's national highways, capacity building activities for local policymakers, engineers and consultants to perform iRAP assessments and turn Star Rating assessments into safer roads.

Greg Smith of the International Road Assessment Programme (iRAP) presented the status of road assessment activities in Pakistan, supported under ADB's regional technical assistance on Unlocking Innovation for Development. The TA aims to scale up innovative road safety operations, with a focus on national highways.

Achieving the Sustainable Development Goal on Halving Road Deaths and Injuries: Impacts and the Role of Infrastructure

Among one of the most challenging targets under the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) is the target to halve the number of global deaths and injuries from road traffic accidents by 2020. The inclusion of road safety in the SDGs is belated recognition that road crashes lead to appallingly high numbers of death and debilitating injury, which places a huge cost to development, society, and the economy. This interactive workshop examined the safety and economic benefits of achieving the said SDG target and assessed the role that road infrastructure can play in advancing road safety.

Youth and Sustainable Transport in Asia and the Pacific

ADB Youth for Asia advocates for improved rural access, road safety, public transportation, and railways. To achieve sustainable, safe, accessible, and reliable public transportation for all, it aims to (i) develop an accessible and engaging network for youth; (ii) encourage meaningful youth stakeholder engagement, and (iii) empower youth as sustainable public transport advocates and stewards.

Road Safety in Bangladesh

Implemented by the Center for Injury Prevention and Research in Bangladesh, the Safe Crossings program aims to create a low speed zone, provide road safety education, and gain commitment from local communities. This presentation also offers some road safety suggestions to policymakers.

How Safe are Your Roads? Lessons from Tajikistan

Each year, around 1.18 million deaths and millions of road accident-related accidents are recorded globally and most of these happen in Asia. Solutions that promote road safety are needed as this alarming number also has a serious economic impact. Even the Sustainable Development Goals recognize this by including it under Target 3.6: "By 2020, halve the number of global deaths and injuries from road traffic accidents”.
