Regional Conference on Navigating the New Normal in ASEAN Plus Three Economies

According to the International Monetary Fund, the world’s economic growth remains subdued as the growth in developing economies is weaker than expected. The sign of sluggish global growth continues to show due to several macroeconomic risks, for example, trade tensions, weak investment due to lack of investor confidence, abrupt shifts in risk sentiment, disinflationary pressure, and deeper than envisaged economic slowdown in the People’s Republic of China (PRC) and Eurozone. Taking into account these factors, the global economy is moving towards a new normal.

Brown Bag Session: Comparative Study of Small and Medium Enterprise Development in Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan

Drastic changes happened with the sudden collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991, including the transition from central planned to a market-based economy.

In a brown bag session, Lyubov Tsoy, intern at Asian Development Bank's Public Management, Finance, Sector, and Trade Division of the Central and West Asia Department, presented a comparative study on the role of small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in economic development. This study specifically looked into SME development trends and trajectories in Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan after the collapse of the Soviet Union.
