Colin McNaught

Director of Strategic Growth & Development
, Ricardo Energy and Environment
Profile / Bio:

Colin has 30 years of experience in providing advice on energy issues for policy makers and investors.

Working initially in energy efficiency, then CHP, he worked on renewable electricity and local energy systems. This work included strategic studies developing projections and scenarios for renewable energy development, horizon-scanning the use of renewable energy technology innovations and markets, as well as developing evidence bases for the functions needed from future power system architecture.

His work on renewable energy feasibility studies includes assessment of opportunities at building level, on business parks and at city and local authority level. These studies involved technical assessment of renewable energy resources, constraints to development, investment returns and business cases. He has undertaken audits and due diligence studies on a range of technologies (wind, hydro, biomass, tidal energy), using a combination of site audits and scrutiny of key technical, environmental and financial data to assess project performance.

He then worked with Ricardo’s automotive and Rail teams to help assess and develop transport energy infrastructure – the solutions needed to provide electricity, hydrogen and ammonia for road, rail and marine use. His current role is leading Ricardo’s Strategic Growth and Development in energy and environment markets. This includes leading hydrogen activities, building on his hydrogen experience since 2009 plus working with clients in Japan, Australia and New Zealand.

Colin is a Chartered Engineer and has played a leading role in a number of UK energy industry associations.
