Digital Transformation and Women’s Employment: The Case of South Korea
The digital age offers significant opportunities to empower women - to earn additional income, enhance employment prospects, and acquire knowledge. But at the same time, digital transformation may have a negative impact on women’s access to resources and opportunities, including jobs, skills, and livelihoods. So how can countries build these opportunities for women and girls while mitigating a negative impact?
This webinar was jointly organized by the Korean Women's Development Institute (KWDI) and the Asian Development Bank’s (ADB) Gender Equality Thematic Group, Education Sector Group, and Digital Technology Unit. It discussed the main findings of the 2020 “Digital Transformation and Women's Employment” study from South Korea, in which Eunjin Oh explores how changing ways of working in different industries that undergo digital transformation will affect the amount and quality of future women's employment across these industries. Eunjin Oh recommended a number of policy interventions as well as specific methods to undertake job training in the digital transformation era so that women can adapt to digital transformation.
Chief of Education Sector Group also shared insights from ADB-led research and field experience on the implications of digital transformation and access to training for the future of women's employment.
