Author / Speaker

Nepal, a lower-middle-income economy has achieved 99% electrification, and 76 of the 77 districts are connected to the national grid. In 2010, Nepal's electrification rate stood at 53%, leaving 12.5 million people without access to electricity. Through targeted investments, Nepal was able to expand access by leveraging small-scale renewable projects and building out grid infrastructure. Key enablers included community involvement in rural areas, the establishment of a dedicated rural electrification directorate with government budget and an investment plan supported by development partners, the establishment of alternative energy promotion center for off-grid solar and micro-hydro systems for remote areas. These initiatives including policy reforms and infrastructure development enabled the country to overcome geographical and logistical challenges. The speaker will also share the success stories of Nepal’s Electricity Authority’s turnaround from a loss-making to a profit-making utility
