10th Regional Conference: Preventing and Combating Corruption in Infrastructure Projects in Asia-Pacific
Asian Development Bank’s Strategy 2030 identifies infrastructure development as a source of global growth and that an efficient infrastructure is a key priority to promote social and economic development. Countries in Asia-Pacific heavily invest in public infrastructure to drive socio-economic growth, facilitate domestic and cross-border trade, and mitigate the effects of climate change. These large-scale projects are highly susceptible to corruption risks and therefore, there is a compelling need to manage corruption risks, develop measures to prevent corruption, and ensure that resources invested in infrastructure projects are used for intended purposes. This is in line with Strategy 2030’s operational priority that calls for the development of institutional capacity to promote effective, timely, and corruption-free service delivery.
The 10th Regional Conference of the Anti-Corruption Initiative for Asia-Pacific was organized to address corruption issues in infrastructure projects. Hosted by the Government of Viet Nam in cooperation with the Government Inspectorate of Viet Nam and supported by Asian Development Bank and Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development, the regional conference comprised of three meetings: Business Integrity Meeting; Public Integrity Network Meeting; and Steering Group Meeting. More than 140 delegates from 28 countries represented by experts and leaders from anti-corruption bodies, local and multinational companies and business organizations, civil society, and international organizations participated in the conference. Delegates exchanged ideas on corruption risks in infrastructure projects and discussed solutions to curb undue influence, strengthen risk management, and improve corruption prevention. H.E. Mr. Truong Hoa Binh, Deputy Prime Minister of the Government of Viet Nam and regional leaders presented the conclusions of the conference during the High Level Segment held at the closing of the conference.
