Power Distribution Modernization project in Timor-Leste approved

ADB approved a loan that will modernize the power distribution system in Timor-Leste and strengthen the utility, Electricidade de Timor-Leste in the amount of $35 million. The loan will help provide sustainable, reliable electricity to 12 municipalities in the country.The Power Distribution Modernization Project is ADB’s first power sector project in Timor-Leste. It will install 140,000 smart meters and utilize prepaid cards to manage household electricity consumption. The project will install a distribution automation system to improve network reliability and 30 distribution transformers to reduce overloading.The project will rehabilitate 290 circuit kilometers of medium and low-voltage distribution lines, set up a distribution control center, establish a distribution management information system, and rehabilitate the main distribution warehouse in the country’s capital, Dili. The project will also boost women’s employment in the energy sector. It will train households, especially women, on electrical safety and productive uses of electricity.
