Enhancing Social Protection and Gender Equality in the Gig Economy
Asian Development Bank (ADB) and the Asian Development Bank Institute (ADBI) will jointly host a webinar on “Enhancing Social Protection and Gender Equality in the Gig Economy”, scheduled to be held on 13 March 2025, 13:00 – 14:30 (Philippine Time).
The rapid growth of the gig economy, driven by advancements in communication technologies, the global internet boom, and accelerated by the COVID-19 pandemic, has created flexible work opportunities for millions, particularly benefiting women and youth. However, this expansion has also exposed significant challenges. Many gig workers lack access to essential social protection measures such as health insurance, income security, and retirement savings. In addition, gig workers often face unsafe work environments, unstable incomes, and limited grievance mechanisms. Across Asia and the Pacific, gaps in regulatory frameworks further leave gig workers vulnerable to financial and health risks. The webinar will showcase innovative strategies and lessons from countries that have successfully implemented social insurance schemes for gig workers, thus aiming to inform policymakers on possible options.
