Profile / Bio: 

Mr. Anshuman Varma is currently the Deputy Head of the Centre for Sustainable Agricultural Mechanization (CSAM), a regional institution of the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) in Beijing. In this role, he oversees the implementation of a wide range of programs for sustainable agricultural mechanization in the Asia-Pacific region and leads the development of new programs and projects. He arrived in Beijing in December 2016.

Before this, Mr. Varma worked with United Nations ESCAP’s regional institutions in other countries, including as a Knowledge Management Coordinator at the Centre for Alleviation of Poverty through Sustainable Agriculture (CAPSA) in Indonesia (2013-2016) and as a Programme Officer at the Asian and Pacific Training Centre for Information and Communication Technology for Development (APCICT) in the Republic of Korea (2009-2013).

Mr. Varma is an Indian national who graduated with a BA (Hons.) in Economics from the University of Delhi (India) in 1996. Subsequently, as a Commonwealth Scholar, he completed an MA in Development Economics from the University of Sussex (UK) in 1998. In 2014, he also completed an Executive Education program in Development at the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University (USA).
