Dr. Michael Caampued is a medical doctor and health systems consultant with more than a decade of involvement in supporting community health development in the Philippines. He is the Local Health System Expert of Asian Development Bank for the BUILD UHC Program. He also currently sits as the founding board member and President of the Philippine Society for Public Health Physicians (PSPHP). He is a Partner for the public health NGO, Alliance for Improving Health Outcomes, Inc (AIHO) and a faculty for the Development Academy of the Philippines.
Between 2010-2014, he worked as a Doctor-to-the Barrio, a rural health physician to the far-flung island municipality of Polillo in northeastern Philippines, and was given the Grand Distinction Award by the Philippine Department of Health. Between 2014-2017, he worked as a technical consultant for Health Systems Strengthening under the World Health Organization – Philippines significantly contributing to the efforts improving maternal and child outcomes within Mindanao and the development of the national policy on integrated service delivery networks. Other involvements include work for organizations including Philhealth, USAID, ICRC, UNICEF, and various local governments in the country. In 2019, he supported country efforts on primary care integration, and in 2020, he was the Pillar Lead for Regional coordination for WHO Philippines COVID-19 emergency response.
He is an Erasmus Mundus scholar who earned his double Master’s degree in Public Health, with Distinction, specializing in Economics and Governance of Health Systems in Transition from the University of Sheffield (United Kingdom),Jagiellonian University (Krakow, Poland) and Ecole des Hautes en Sante Publique (Rennes, France). He also has a Master’s degree in public management from the Development Academy of the Philippines (Grand distinction); and earned his medical degree from the University of the Philippines - College of Medicine where he received the Sir Hugh Greenwood Award in community health.
