Shri Abhay Bakre took over as Director General (Head) of Bureau of Energy Efficiency in 2017 which is the nodal organisation under Central Government to develop strategies for energy transition in the country. He is also Indian Sherpa for Clean Energy Ministerial (CEM) platform of 29 Government Members. He represented India in G20 Energy Transitions Working Group and G-20 Energy Ministerial meetings at Argentina (2018), Japan (2019), Bali (2022) and virtual meetings by Kingdom on Saudi Arabia (2020) and Italy (2021). He was key negotiator in Indian delegation team for COP 26 at Glasgow in 2021.
He is instrumental in preparing Energy Transition Roadmap for Indian economy in line with ‘Panchamrit” announcement and his current priorities are to accelerate new policies and programmes to facilitate climate change mitigation and decarbonisation of country’s economy.
With his consistent efforts and dedication, amendments to Energy Conservation Act were notified in December 2022 that would accelerate India’s future strategies for climate actions. He has also successfully formulated the procedural framework for Indian Carbon Market and accordingly Carbon Credit Trading scheme has been notified in June 2023.
Before joining Bureau of Energy Efficiency, he was Executive Director in the Ministry of Railways and he developed GHG reduction roadmap for Indian Railways.
As the Head of Petroleum Conservation Research Association (PCRA) in the Ministry of Petroleum & Natural Gas, he initiated fuel efficiency norms in transport sector and appliance sector.
He also worked as Joint Development Commissioner in the Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises and was Nodal Officer for National Manufacturing Competitiveness Programme.
Shri Abhay Bakre is an M.Tech in Electrical Engineering from IIT, Kharagpur. He joined 1988 Batch of Indian Railway Service of Electrical Engineers and worked in several major Railway assignments including Delhi Metro and Kolkata Metro extension projects.
