Profile / Bio: 

Dr Nepal has been working with the International Water Management Institute (IWMI) Nepal as a Researcher – Water Resources and Climate Change since March 2022. He is responsible for leading and managing applied research on water resources, water-energy- food-environment (WEFE) nexus, and climate change in the Himalayan region, including Nepal, Southeast, and South Asia.

He also undertakes research for development initiatives on hydrology, water security, and water resources management to deliver science, innovation, and local capacity development. Prior to IWMI, Dr Nepal worked with International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD) from December 2012 to Feb 2022 as ‘Climate and Hydrology Group Lead'. He was responsible for designing and implementing research activities on climate change and water resources in the Himalayan region.

In the last 15 years, he has contributed to scientific advancement in Himalayan hydrology, climate change, and a better understanding of upstream-downstream linkages of land and water management of various scales. These collaborations have resulted in important scientific publications. Dr Nepal has PhD in hydrology and climate change from the Friedrich Schiller University of Jena, Germany in 2012. He has two Master's degrees in Environmental Management from Pokhara University (2003) and Anthropology in natural resources management from Tribhuvan University (2006). Dr Nepal has more than 17 years of work experience with national and international organizations.
