Professor Ian Curran is the Deputy Dean Health Professions at the College of Health and Medicine, Australian National University (ANU). Professor Curran has a distinguished track record in medical education leadership, policy and professional regulation and is recognised as an expert in the field of medical education and transformational leadership.
Prof Ian Curran graduated in Medicine from King’s College London in 1992, He undertook his higher specialty training in Anaesthesia and Pain Medicine at St Bartholomew’s Hospital and The Royal London Hospitals. He completed his Pain Fellowship at St Thomas’ Hospital. In 2003, Ian was appointed consultant in Anaesthesia and Pain Medicine at St Bartholomew’s Hospital. A strategic academic leader and passionate educator, Ian has been at the forefront of medical educational innovation for over 20 years. Prof Curran has championed simulation-based education, human factors, and patient safety training in the UK and beyond. He led London’s multi-award-winning Simulation and Technology-enhanced Learning Initiative (STeLI). This initiative won the HSJ Award for Patient Safety in 2009, the BMJ Award for Excellence in Healthcare Education in 2011.
Prof Curran has been Postgraduate Dean of Educational Excellence in London and Professor of Innovation and Excellence in Healthcare Education at Barts School of Medicine and Dentistry, Queen Mary University of London. As Assistant Director of Education and Professional Standards at the UK General Medical Council he led the reform of UK regulatory standards for undergraduate and postgraduate medical education. In 2017, Ian was appointed as Vice Dean of Education at Duke-NUS Medical School in Singapore, Ian led the Office of Education which delivered a pioneering graduate entry MD programme and portfolio of Graduate Studies programmes. Prof Curran was Co-Director of the SingHealth Duke-NUS Academic Medicine Education Institute where he co-led the strategic Joint Education Masterplan for one of the largest and foremost Academic Medical Centres in Asia.
