Naning Mardiniah is a Senior Safeguards Officer (Resettlement) for Indonesia and Timor Leste. In the Resident Mission, she processes and administers safeguard activities, with a focus on resettlement issues in projects in infrastructure, urban development, sector loans, and private sector development. She also evaluates ADB-financed projects to ensure that the projects are designed and implemented in accordance with ADB safeguard policies.
Naning Mardiniah has been working in social safeguards (resettlement and indigenous peoples) for more than a decade. Since 2008 she has worked in various ADB-financed projects in energy, roads, flood management, water resource management, and private sector development. She leads social safeguards for ongoing projects in Indonesia and supports non- delegated projects in Indonesia and Timor Leste. She also works on several ADB technical assistance (TA and RETA), including support for capacity building training on involuntary resettlement, enhancing the legal and administrative framework for land, strengthening country safeguard systems, and supporting the preparation of regulations on parcel-based land valuation.
Prior to ADB and in early 1990s, she worked as a researcher, social development specialist, and co-author of books on democracy, governance, and human rights. Naning graduated from Gajahmada University’s Anthropology Department and University of Indonesia’s Social Development Department. She participated in international and regional training, including involuntary resettlement, ADB Safeguard Policy Statement, gender mainstreaming, transformative leadership, and human rights. She was active in regional and national women organizations and was a chairperson of the Asian Women for Cooperative Development Forum (AWCF) based in Manila in 2007 – 2008.
