Jobs of the Future: Building Diversity into the Net Zero Transition
The net-zero transition will require significant investments in infrastructure, energy efficiency, and clean technologies, which could create job opportunities in sectors such as construction, manufacturing, and engineering. By 2050, the renewable energy sector alone could create up to 42 million jobs globally, with 6 million just in Southeast Asia. However, transitioning workers from fossil fuel industries to renewable energy will require investments in education and training to build the workforce needed to fill these new jobs.
This may include training programs for engineers, technicians, and other workers in the renewable energy sector, as well as reskilling schemes. This thematic session at the Asian Development Bank's (ADB) fourth Southeast Asia Development Symposium (SEADS) discussed the challenges and opportunities to promote workforce diversity in ASEAN, with a focus on the policies, education programs, and private sector engagement needed for accelerating the region's net-zero ambition.
The session was co-organized with Save the Children, Economic Research Institute for ASEAN and East Asia, and Generation.
With the theme, "Imagining a Net-Zero ASEAN," SEADS 2023 explored measures governments, communities, and the private sector could take to progress toward carbon neutrality.
