Connecting ecosystem services values to decision-making
Knowing the full range of benefits and values offered by different wetland ecosystem services is important in making decisions, not just for the purpose of conservation but also in determining best options for uplifting the lives of households and communities. Several cases had been shared here, including a land protected and co-managed by the US government and the Nisqually Indian Tribe. Likewise, an example of a pre- and post-restoration analysis is shared, with significant increase in the value of properties after an environmental restoration was undertaken. An example of how floodplains help in trapping sediments and nutrients is also shared, with valuation of such a service at about $223 million/year (Chesapeake, Virginia, US).
