Half of the Netherlands is below sea level. Moreover, its three major rivers have more water due to climate change, while many people live behind the dikes that sandwhich the waterways. Without flood protection, the country may be in danger of experiencing another great flood, like the one that wreaked havoc in the country in 1995. The Room for the River program is the country's innovative approach to flood protection-it expanded the rivers in more than 30 places.
