Dr. Liu Guihuan is a professor at the Chinese Academy for Environmental Planning (CAEP). Her research mainly focuses on the fields of ecological compensation, ecological economy, and environmental economy, among others. Dr. Liu has taken part in a number of research projects assigned by local governments that focus on eco-compensation mechanism and policy design.

Since 2005, Dr. Liu Guihuan has participated in many research programmes and projects related to eco-compensation, including:

  1. the research project entitled Temporal and Spatial Patterns of Ecosystem Services of Guanting Reservoir and Eco-compensation Mechanism supported by the National Natural Science Foundation of China;
  2. as team leader of the sub-project, Research and Demonstration Project of Watershed Ecological Compensation and Pay for Pollution, supported by the National Key Technologies R&D Program of Water Pollution Control and Management, whereby Dr. Liu was in charge of the study on developing an accounting method and criteria of ecological compensation;
  3. as environmental economic specialist, Dr. Liu joins in the technical assistant project for the Preparation of National Guidelines for Eco-compensation in River Basins, supported by the Asian Development Bank; and
  4. as an expert from the People’s Republic of China, Dr. Liu participates in the sub-project, Eco-compensation Mechanism and Policy Design for Trans-jurisdictional Water Environment.

In recent years, besides contributing to basic researches as an expert, Dr. Liu also provides technical support for the Ministry of Environmental Protection in developing eco-compensation policies. Dr. Liu has published more than 20 academic papers, and jointly published 3 books on ecological compensation.
