Pierluigi Mancarella is Chair Professor of Electrical Power Systems at The University of Melbourne, Australia, and part-time Professor of Smart Energy Systems at The University of Manchester, UK. He received the MSc and PhD degrees in electrical energy systems from the Politecnico di Torino, Torino, Italy, and worked as a post-doc at Imperial College London, UK. Pierluigi has held several visiting research positions, including at the US National Renewable Energy Laboratory, and professorships at Ecole Centrale de Lille, France, and Universidad de Chile, Santiago, Chile. His research interests include techno-economic modelling of new energy technologies, energy network planning under uncertainty, grid integration of low-carbon technologies, multi-energy systems, and risk and resilience of future networks. He has been involved in/led around 50 research projects worldwide and is an author of several books and book chapters of over 200 research publications. Pierluigi is an Editor in several prestigious journals, an IEEE Power and Energy Society Distinguished Lecturer, and the former Chair of the Energy Working Group of the IEEE European Public Policy Initiative. He also holds the 2017 Veski Innovation Fellowship by the Victorian Government and led the Melbourne Energy Institute’s power system security assessment studies in support of the “Finkel Review.”
