Marcel Kroese

Marine Biologist Consultant
, International NGOs
Profile / Bio:

Marcel Kroese is a marine biologist that has worked in a number of roles in the marine environment from classic research to law enforcement for government agencies as well as international NGOs. He has been involved in innovation in fisheries management, primarily working on the management of tuna fisheries and their impacts on sharks and marine mammals. Because of the high levels of illegal and unreported fishing in many fisheries, he pivoted to working on monitoring, control, and surveillance in a law enforcement capacity. As a government official, he established several specialist units to investigate marine wildlife crimes in South Africa and internationally.

Marcel has been involved in modernizing marine law enforcement through capacity building and training of Fisheries Officers on topics that include surveillance and detection techniques, international wildlife crime investigations, and international cooperation to reduce the trafficking of marine products and international legal instruments.

Marcel is continually seeking to alleviate pressure on the fisheries resources in marine ecosystems, hence his interest in the application of sustainable electricity generation to power alternative protein products that will maintain the food security needs and maritime identity of coastal communities. He is currently working on an EU supported project in Cambodia
