Dr. Barry Hankin is JBA’s Head of Environmental Modelling specializing in integrated modelling across urban-green and NBS. He is an award-winning expert in modelling NBS, and a widely published co-investigator on the Natural Environment Research Council (UK) NBS research program. Using his unique combination of skills in whole-system modelling and integrated risk analysis, he has evaluated the resilience of measures to enhance natural capital across urban and rural areas at local and national scales. He is developing a national-scale evaluation of the effectiveness of catchment measures for the UK government. Having developed multi-metric approaches to appraise flood risk in Europe, Barry has pioneered the use of catastrophe modelling to evaluate IFRM and NBS.
Barry has led the development of the innovative National Integrated Risk Analytics (NIRA) approach for assessing national scale risk and prioritization of IFRM measures including Nature-Based Solutions, which has been populated with data for Nepal, Indonesia, and Sindh Province in Pakistan. Using the NIRA tool as a basis, Barry has led the co-developed a prioritization framework to assist the Indonesian Government with the prioritization of FRM schemes.
