Howard Bamsey is Director-General of the Global Green Growth Institute. He was previously Adjunct Professor of Climate Change and Energy Security at the United States Studies Centre and Adjunct Professor in the Climate Change Institute at the Australian National University. He is affiliated with The Centre for Climate Economics and Policy at the Australian National University and was Special Adviser on Green Growth to the Australian Government. During 2011, he was Special Adviser on Sustainable Development to the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade of Australia.

From 2008 to 2010 he was Australia’s Special Envoy on Climate Change and a Deputy Secretary in the Department of Climate Change and Energy Efficiency. Mr. Bamsey was formerly head of the central Australian Government agency on climate change, the Australian Greenhouse Office. In 2006 and 2007 he co-chaired the United Nations ‘Dialogue on Long-term Cooperative Action on Climate Change’, which launched negotiations within the Climate Change Convention.

He spent over twenty-three years in the Australian Foreign Service. He served in the main United Nations centers of New York, Geneva and Vienna as well as other capitals. His positions included Ambassador to the United Nations in Geneva and Ambassador for the Environment.
